Burst water main at Grays Riverside flats

A BURST water main halted water supplies to three Grays high-rise blocks of flats last Wednesday, November 12.

Residents in Greenwood House, Butler House and Davall House were told of the problem within minutes of the council finding out at 11.40am.

Caretakers and Housing staff knocked on doors and delivered letters to all the affected tenants and residents.

Early in the afternoon a stand-pipe was installed close to the blocks so residents had access to water and by 6pm a temporary repair of the main was completed and supplies restored to homes.

Thurrock Council’s Cabinet member for Housing, Councillor Tunde Ojetola, said this week: “I would like to pass on my thanks and congratulations to all the staff, external contractors and outside agencies who reacted so quickly and worked so hard to make sure residents’ lives were disrupted as little as possible in the circumstances.

“I would also like to pass on my thanks to residents for their understanding attitude to the situation.

“Sometimes things happen which the council can do little about.

“It’s good to know that Housing staff can react swiftly.”

However, in case there were further problems bottled water was delivered to the blocks with the caretakers on stand-by to hand them out to vulnerable residents if necessary.

A cover and a light were also installed around the stand-pipe.

Work on permanently repairing the burst main was started on Monday November 17 and is expected to take some weeks to complete.

The temporary stand-pipe will remain in place during the permanent repairs in case of another incident.

Bottled water also remains on stand by.
