Academy dancers honoured by England rugby star James Haskell

FIVE members of Thurrock-based colour guard, The Academy, were honoured by England Rugby international James Haskell at a recent awards bash.

They attended the Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement Awards ceremony on Monday October 27 at London’s Mermaid Conference and Events Centre.

The Academy is celebrating its 21st year and now has 45 members at the club.

Colour guard is a form of dance using props such as flags, rifles and sabres.

The Academy choreographs their own routines and enter various competitions and perform at shows and events across the country.

One of the award winners was 17-year-old Laura Rose, who has been an integral performer for the Academy, despite undergoing gruelling surgery on her arm.

She said: “I’ve just had to learn to adapt and be aware of my limitations. To be honest, there are only one or two moves that I am unable to do so I hardly notice it at all.

“I love being part of the Academy, it is like a big family, we all spend so much time together at weekends rehearsing that we are all very close.”

Four youngsters from the Thurrock based organisation were presented with Jack Petchey Achievement awards at the Mermaid.

They were: Laura Rose, 17, Aoife O’Keefe, 25, Jay Sharman, 13 and Raymondo George, 21.

Vicky Thurston won a Leader Award but was not able to attend the presentation to collect her prize.
