Barry Lawrence welcomes Thurrock Council's change of heart on colour scheme for cabs

A THURROCK councillor has welcomed Thurrock Council's change of heart on plans to impose a rigid colour code for Thurrock licensed cabs from January 1, 2009.

At a meeting of Thurrock Council's Public Protection Committee plans to colour code Thurrock's cabs were delayed following protests from Labour councillors, the Thurrock Taxi Drivers Association and the GMB Trade Union.

There will now be a consultation and a phased introduction of any new colour scheme.

Councillor Barry Lawrence said: "We agreed a raft of the sensible new regulations designed to enhance safety and improve comfort for passengers.

"These will be introduced on January 1 2009. "We could not approve plans to introduce colour coding.

"We won two important concessions; a proper and widespread consultations and any new colour scheme will be phased in over a period of up to seven years."
