Environment Action Team day success for Thurrock Council in Stanford-le-Hope and Corringham

THE latest Thurrock Environmental Action (EAT) Day took place last Wednesday in the Corringham and Stanford-le-Hope areas.

Organised by the Thurrock Community Safety Partnership, the event involved staff from a wide range of partners making a highly visible sweep of the two towns.

Thurrock Council’s Cabinet member for Public Protection, Coun Ben Maney, said: “These Environmental Action Team Days provide the council and its partners an opportunity to do their ‘day job’ while focusing on a specific area.

“By working together in this way we show we are out and about on the streets of Thurrock, working hard to improve the area and endeavouring to reduce the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour as well as improving residents’ quality of life.”

As well as Thurrock Council officers, police and fire officers, and PCSOs, officers from the DVLA and TV Licensing were involved.

Trading Standards and Essex Fire and Rescue officers visited 32 stores selling fireworks, reminding them of their legal responsibilities as well as promoting the partnership’s safety messages and delivering posters.

From 7.30 Wednesday morning, DVLA and council environmental enforcement officers were on the lookout for illegal vehicles, parked without tax or insurance.

Over the day two vehicles were lifted and removed and six were clamped - one of those clamped was later released after outstanding tax was paid.

A further 17 vehicles had stickers placed on them warning owners that they will be removed if they are not made fully legal.

The council’s parking enforcement team also targeted the area while staff from community safety, housing, environmental health, streets, and highways joined police and fire officers walking the streets searching out potential problem areas.

High on their list was graffiti, and the Be Smart team were travelling the area removing graffiti wherever possible during the day.

They also discovered an abandoned three-piece suite scattered across parts of the Crux Estate.

That has now been removed.
