According to data collected in 2006 Thurrock is one of the worst performing areas in the country for community cohesion.
Cabinet member for Community Culture and Leisure, Coun Joy Redsell, said: “Community cohesion is the buzz-phrase at the moment but that doesn’t mean it’s not important.”
The council’s Cabinet will be receiving a report on Community Cohesion, the funding and initial plans for spending it at its next meeting on Wednesday November 12.
Councillor Redsell added: “It is a concern that the different groups living in Thurrock don’t appear to get on and we have to do something about that.
“It’s not about race, gender or disability; it is about pulling together, everyone working towards the same overall aim, accepting and uniting on common concerns beyond difference, and using that to find innovative solutions to what troubles us.
“It is important that we spend this money properly and don’t fritter it away; that we target it in ways that will show Thurrock to its best overall advantage and use it to bring the varying communities of Thurrock together.
“I will be recommending to Cabinet that we accept this report and agree the priorities for a targeted approach to community cohesion.”
