Thurrock Memories : Corringham Shrimp Factory

DOWN Memory Lane this week looks back to our Corringham shrimp story.

Many thanks to Valerie Grant of Corringham who found a blue ceramic Young’s potted shrimp pot with lid and has donated it to Thurrock Museum, minus the shrimps!

Valerie worked in the administration section at the shrimp factory in Corringham. The bowl is about 4” wide at the top and has “Young’s Potted Shrimps on the front and on the reverse a registered trade mark of a shrimp holding a pot of potted shrimps! The ceramic is manufactured by Royal Norfolk – made in Staffordshire, England.

HISTORY FEEDBACK: I received this memory from Ken and Eileen ward, who now live in Northern Ireland: “I only get the Gazette in batches every three months and have just worked my way through May and June - and wanted to comment on Eileen Fowler. "I see you have done a piece - but maybe I can help on where she and her husband lived. I am from Grays originally - Arthur Street School, Palmer’s Boys School , then in 1962 to Durham University.

"I was married in 1965, and needed to do some research work in London, from August 1966 to April 1967, so thought the Grays area, where my parents lived, would be a good place to stay. We looked around, and eventually found an advert for rented accommodation in High House, Horndon on the Hill.

"When we went to look at it we were surprised to see it was where Eileen Fowler lived with her husband - right on top of the hill, opposite the Wool Market. "We had one very large room on the first floor, and use of a kitchen and bathroom with two other tenants who were teachers.

"The room had clearly been her studio since at one end was an enormous mirror, which she would have used for her dance training.

We have lived in Northern Ireland for 40 years, but many people in the area will know me from Palmer’s, and my sister still lives in Grays – hence the papers every three months. We still remember our stay in the village with affection.”

HISTORY FACT OF THE WEEK: August 30, 1948: Training Ship Worcester in process of being scrapped, capsized and sank off Grays.
