Daniel Hollington match raises thousands for charity

A CELEBRITY charity football match in memory of a tragic young man from Corringham raised thousands for charity.

Daniel Hollington, 21, of Digby Road, Corringham, died on October 30 last year after falling from a roof while working at a Northampton industrial estate.

The match, organised by Daniel’s friends, was played between a Dan Hollington XI made up of Dan’s friends and an Arsenal celebrity XI.

The game was played at East Thurrock United Football Club in Rookery Hill, Corringham, on Sunday November 2 attracting almost 500 spectators.

Among the Arsenal team were Groundforce’s Tommy Walsh, who pulled off the save of the day in goal, Casualty actor Patrick Robinson, Basildon-based former professional boxer Terry Marsh, Surrey and England cricket star Mark Ramprakash and ex-Arsenal player Danny O’Shea.

After a thrilling first half scores were level at three apiece.

Greg Richardson, Kane Hollington and Canvey Island forward Jay Curran all getting on the score sheet for the Dan Hollington XI.

But after the interval Arsenal upped the tempo and pulled four back with the game ending 3 - 7 to Arsenal.

One of the organisers Liam Dennis, 23, of Tasman Close, Corringham, said: “It was a brilliant day and we’d like to thank everyone who came to support it and Dan’s family and friends.”

The total raised was £2,300, which was split between the Down’s Syndrome Association and a charity of Arsenal’s choice.

  1. I realise this is sometime ago and my belated condolences. I am an amateur Arsenal historian and I wonder if this is the Daniel Hollington who played for Arsenal's academy as I try to feature all of our former young players in birthdays, match reports, etc. If any could contact me with any information about Dan so that we may suitably remember him as Arsenal fans please contact me at martincarguy@sky.com Many thanks.
