Thurrock Memories: Linford

DOWN Memory Lane this week visits Linford, or Mucking Ford as it was called before the 1890s developers started to build a new housing estate, shops and chapel.

Then a small hamlet on the borders of East Tilbury and Mucking parish, now a considerable enlarged settlement from this 1908 postcard sold through the large Grays departmental stores ‘Joyes’ of Grays.

What is pleasing to note now is that the house and forge are under new management, in 1908 it was called Motts Forge but now we should refer to it as Theabolds Forge - The Horndon blacksmith, Alan and David having relocated this year to the disused forge and bringing it back to life! Looking at the photograph with the crowd of locals, a dog and two horses, you would probably have difficulty in imagining the current, Buckingham Hill Road and Mucking Ford Road junction with its mini roundabout opposite the later built George & Dragon public house.

However in the postcard image I can see one advertisement on the corner of the forge building promoting The Daily Chronicle – I wonder when that stopped production!
