Mast campaign gathers momentum

A CAMPAIGN against a proposal to install a mobile phone mast at the Daneholes roundabout is gaining momentum.

On Saturday Little Thurrock ward councillors, Rob Gledhill and Stuart St Clair Haslam received more letters rejecting the proposal including one from Liz Jackson, headteacher at Little Thurrock Primary School.

Coun Gledhill said: “This brings the total letters rejecting the current proposal to over a hundred and this is just from parents of pupils at the school.

“I am sure if the proposal becomes a planning application the level of objections will be much higher.”

Coun Stuart St Clair Haslam added: “There are already far too many masts in the area and this will be a mast too far.

“I am so strongly opposed to this if it becomes a planning application I will be stepping down as chair of planning for that item and speaking against it.”

The proposal will bring the number of phone masts at the Daneholes Roundabout to five with a further seven in less than 600 metres.

A similar planning application for a mast on the opposite side of the road was refused last year by Thurrock’s Planning Committee but subsequently overturned by the Government’s Planning Inspectorate.

Coun Gledhill said “I hope the proposal does not lead to a request for planning permission and that Vodaphone listen to the community.

“However they started consultation as the school broke up for half term denying parents of half the consultation period.

“It makes you wonder if they are just paying lip service to their own consultation guidelines.”
