1,700 Thurrock people take advantage of IT course

MORE than 1,700 people have taken advantage of Thurrock Council’s Wiser for IT scheme in the borough’s libraries.

They have learned how to use basic computer skills including how to email; use the internet; make personalised cards, posters and leaflets; use digital cameras; downloading; and putting attachments to emails.

Cabinet member for Community, Culture and Leisure, Coun Joy Redsell, said: “Some of these people are now contributing to the vibrant economy of Thurrock, going back to work or volunteering for various organisations.

“Younger ones are also getting trained on learning how to write their CVs, and basic computer tips, to help them back to work.”

Thurrock Libraries’ People’s Network manager-ICT, Aby Carew, added: “It’s a great way for over fifties to get up to speed with new technology, that could give them a new creative outlet, improve their employment opportunities or simply help them stay in touch with their friends and families.”

Wiser for IT sessions in local libraries are informal, easy and relaxed, and those taking part have enjoyed the social interaction, making friends and even meeting old school mates.

To take part in Wiser for IT sessions, call your local library. It is a free two-hour session a week for five weeks.

You will learn how to use the mouse, searching the Internet, sending and replying emails, using calendars to remind you of birthdays and special events, word processing, and how to attach pictures to documents.
