Council celebrate rising recycling rate

THURROCK'S recycling rates continue to rocket reaching a record level of 34.6 per cent for April, May and June this year.

Councillor Steve Veryard, the Council's cabinet member for Environmental Services, said: "Recycling continues to increase month by month and has tripled from just 11 per cent in 2004".

"We are now nearly five percent above our target for this year.

"We pledged to raise recycling rates and I would like to thank all resident for their continued efforts. We have set ourselves an ambitious figure to achieve 50 per cent recycling and with the help of residents, we are on target to hit this.

"With increasing taxes on the disposal of rubbish it is important that we all do our bit to recycle the waste each of our homes produces so we can reduce our dependency on landfill."
