Transport strategy supported by Thurrock Council

THURROCK councillors unanimously supported a transport strategy that will last until 2021.

They met on Wednesday July 23 to discus the strategy which aims to tackle congestion and improve accessibility by walking, cycling and public transport -with a particular focus on getting to education, employment and health services.

Improving the safety of road users is another objective.

The strategy is complimentary to the emerging Local Development Framework for Thurrock, which sets out how the borough will evolve over the same period and where new jobs and homes will be provided.

A report to the full council emphasised that: "Key to the development of the new strategy has been the input and direction provided by the Local Strategic Partnership transport forum."

The forum, established in 2006, includes representation from Government, transport service providers such as the Highways Agency and bus operators, as well as local community groups.

It has helped to shape the strategy, and will be responsible for delivering against the action plan.

Thurrock’s Cabinet member for Highways and Transportation, Coun Neil Rockcliffe, said: “This is the first time that the Council has produced a standalone long term strategy for transport provision in Thurrock.

"It examines current and potential future hot-spots and seeks to find remedies; and it provides residents and businesses with a well-thought-out and robust basis for improved transport across the borough.

"Delivery of better transport infrastructure and services will be essential if our communities are to thrive.

"It will make our lives safer, and it will make us healthier."

The Thurrock Transport Strategy 2008 – 2021 will be published later this year.
