Residents cry foul over mess

THURROCK Council say they will crackdown on the Chadwell St Mary dog owners who allow their pets to foul a children’s play area on Godman Road, following residents’ complaints.

Residents of the George Tilbury and Gooderham House flats have complained to the council about the constant dog mess in the nearby play area caused by dog owners in the flats who take their pets down there at night.

One resident of George Tilbury House, who did not want to be named, said: “People take their dogs into the play area of a night and then leave their muck everywhere, there are no signs saying that dogs are not allowed in and there are no dog mess bins.

“We’ve been told by a paramedic that dogs mess can be very dangerous to children, causing kidney failure and even blindness, but the children have nowhere else to play.”

He added: “We’ve been asking the council to do something about it for ages, they should lock the gate to the play area of a night so it can’t happen anymore.”

Thurrock Council say that there are no dog bins next to the play area because dogs are not allowed there.

However, they have said that they will be putting up new signs which say that dogs are prohibited in the play area, and they will also send a letter to all tenants in the surrounding flats reminding them that dog fouling will be treated as a breach of the tenancy agreement.

They are currently looking at CCTV footage of the play area in an attempt to identify the offenders.

Thurrock Council spokesperson Andy Lever said: “The play area has been inspected and cleared of dog mess by the caretaking service.

“CCTV footage of the play area is currently being reviewed and in the early stages there are already a number of images of dogs in the play area.

“The council intends to attempt to identify residents who are doing this and to treat this as a breach of the tenancy agreement.

“New signs are being ordered to remind residents that it is prohibited to allow dogs in this area.

“Once identified the offending people will be referred under Cleaner Neighbourhood and Environmental Act 2005 and will be issued with a fine.”
