Councillor speaks up for new college

Thurrock's leading councillor for education has welcomed news that a new college will open in Grays within months.

Councilor Sue MacPherson, the council's cabinet member for Children's Services, said: "This is great news for Thurrock and is another step in our vision for the regeneration of the borough."

She was speaking after the Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation's planners backed the proposal.

The Southend-based South East Essex College aims to open its temporary building between Argent Street and New Road by January and to have a permanent campus in place within five years.

The college in Grays will offer a wide range of qualifications from A and AS Level to diplomas and business and professional courses.

Despite the fact that the design of the temporary buildings fell foul of its own planning committee initially, Thurrock Council worked with the college, the Development Corporation, and the Learning Skills Council to find the funds to finance the project and coujncillor MacPherson said: "This shows this council's commitment to improving the education facilities and education prospects of our children and future generations.

"One of our key objectives is to drive up education attainment across Thurrock and we have worked hard with our partners to ensure this campus comes to Grays and develops into a first class permanent education facility."
