Terence Terry Hipsey of Thurrock Council drops by school council meeting in Stanford-le-Hope

STANFORD-le-Hope Primary School’s school council had a couple of VIP visitors to its meeting last week.

The school’s council meets every half-term and on Wednesday October 22 the Leader of Thurrock Council, Councillor Terry Hipsey and his Stanford-le-Hope West colleague, Councillor Eddie Hardiman joined the young people.

The pupils discussed everything from making maths interesting to how money raised by parents in the summer should be spent, before Councillor Hipsey and Councillor Hardiman told their stories and explained how Thurrock Council works.

Councillor Hipsey told the children: “You’re a credit to your school, putting yourselves up to represent others at such a young age.

“It is my view that helping others makes you a good person — that’s why I stood for election to the council — and you are already doing this.”

Councillor Hipsey gave the children and their classmates, erasers, pencils, rulers and stickers.

Afterwards he said: “I’m a former pupil and I’m really impressed by the way these young people are being asked for their views by the school and by their ideas.

“I’m sure it will pay dividends in future.”

He added: “It was good to be at a ‘council’ meeting where everyone agreed on the way forward.”
