Thurrock Council issue a firework warning

THURROCK Council and the Thurrock Community Safety Partnership have issued a warning about the penalties of misusing fireworks.

The physical dangers of misusing fireworks are well-known, bit it is also an offence to let off fireworks for most of the year.

Thurrock Council and its partners in the Thurrock Community Safety Partnership are raising awareness of the penalties that can be incurred if fireworks are used to harass, intimidate or cause criminal damage.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the times when it is an offence to use fireworks and to warn residents that it is an offence to throw or set off fireworks in a public place and for anyone under the age of 18 to possess fireworks in a public place.

It is also an offence for anyone to use adult fireworks between the hours of 11pm and 7am except for the permitted firework nights on November 5 until 12am, Diwali, New Year’s Eve and Chinese New Year until 1am.

Councillor Ben Maney, Thurrock Council’s Cabinet member for Public Safety, said: “The council’s Public Protection Team and the Partnership will take action against those who spoil what is a very enjoyable activity at this time of the year.”

The campaign has been publicised by posters distributed to retailers who sell fireworks, community groups, schools and colleges, libraries, police stations, and council Housing Offices.
