Thurrock Council ask the Development Corporation to have a good look at DP World's latest plans for Shell Haven

THURROCK Council’s Planning Committee have asked the Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation to look carefully at the latest proposals for the DP World superport development at Shell Haven.

At their meeting on Thursday evening, the committee discussed plans for roads, drainage and landscaping within the development.

Although supporting the scheme, members were concerned about several issues.

They said that a safety audit should be carried out on the design of the roads, similar to that which would be held on any road being adopted by the authority.

In addition the views of bus operators should be sought about the road design.

The design of bus stops on the site and facilities for cyclists were also areas that the committee thought should be looked at.

Members also agreed that, until the new roundabout entrance to the site was built close to The Sorrells, there were worries about cyclists and pedestrians having to cross The Manorway at Gate No 2.

Councillor Stuart St Clair-Haslam, chair of the committee, said: “The problem of people getting to the site before the road system is complete does not appear to have been considered in this application.

“The safety of workers and visitors to Shell Haven should be a top priority and some provision should be made for crossing The Manorway.

“It is also important that bus operators are consulted on the proposed roads system as they will no doubt have to use it regularly.”
