New calendar launched by art therapy students

A NEW calendar produced by members of an Art Therapy course in Thurrock is now on sale.

The 2009 calendar was launched at the Carers’ Centre in Cromwell Road, Grays, on Tuesday November 11, with the artists, other members of the course and Thurrock Councillors Ben Maney and Joy Redsell.

The Art Therapy course runs at the Thurrock Carers’ Centre and the Oasis Resource Centre, on Orsett Road, who work with people recovering from drug and alcohol problems.

Diana Meyes, a carer herself, took up art therapy at the Carers’ Centre and then took over the course when the tutor left.

She also runs the course at the Oasis Centre.

The painting for the front of the calendar was created by Mike, who attends Oasis.

What is all the more remarkable is that it was painted left handed as Mike had just undergone an operation on his right arm which was out of commission.

Councillor Maney, cabinet member for Public Protection, said: “Oasis do great work with people recovering from drug and alcohol problems and this calendar is a wonderful way of celebrating their successes.”

Councillor Redsell, cabinet member for Community, Culture and Leisure, added: “Some of these paintings are really lovely and the calendar is an excellent way to advertise the tremendous work done by the council’s Carers’ Centre and Oasis.”

The calendar is available from the Carers’ Centre and reception at Thurrock Council’s Civic Offices in New Road, Grays, for a donation of at least £2.

All the money raised will go to Oasis to help fund the art therapy classes in the future.
