Thurrock Council win green award

THURROCK Council’s Be Smart campaign has won national recognition, securing the Silver Green Apple Award.

The trophy was presented by The Green Organisation at its annual international awards ceremony at the House of Commons on Monday, November 10.

The Green Apple Awards are presented in recognition of companies, councils and communities carrying out projects that enhance the environment and there were 500 nominations this year.

Councillor Steve Veryard, who was at the ceremony with Be Smart Education Officer Sue Bloss, said afterwards: “Cleaning up and greening our borough is one of our primary aims as a council and this award highlights our success.

“Be Smart means exactly what it says — we want a smart-looking borough for ourselves and for our visitors.”

The award judges said: “This low budget high impact scheme is now well known in the area, people know the logo, and use the help-line frequently.

“One area which has made a big impact is in graffiti reduction and cleaning, with all parts of the community involved in its deterrence and reporting.”

The award-winning project will be featured in the next Green Book, the world’s only work of reference on environmental best practice, and Thurrock will be receiving a Green Hero Wall Shield during a special prize-giving ceremony on board the Royal Yacht Britannia, Edinburgh, in February.

Mark Wolens, the award’s campaign manager, added: “To show continued interest in environmental issues during the current financial climate shows great foresight and they deserve the recognition of being Green Apple Award winners.

“To then go further and become Green Heroes is an even bolder statement of environmental intent, and organisations that go the extra mile and become Green Heroes are demonstrating a serious commitment to the world around them. They invest in a better future for us all and deserve to be recognised for their efforts.”
