Pension credit warning

THURROCK Council is urging people over 60 to contact the Pension Service to make sure they are getting the benefits they are entitled to.

Large numbers of older people in Thurrock are not claiming the pension credit and other benefits.

From October 8, there will be changes happening to the pension service that will mean that new applicants will only be able to get three months pension credit backdating instead of the current 12 months.

Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care and £659.25 a meeting, Councillor Amanda Arnold, said: "Older people in Thurrock who are struggling with the increasing cost of living could be missing out on money that could really help.

"During 2007/08, Thurrock Council's Customer Finance team brought in an additional £719,041 in benefits including Pension Credit for people who didn't realise they were entitled to those benefits so it really is worth checking."
