Corringham mum, Joanne Bassett, angry over parking rules at Tesco, Pitsea

A MUM has vowed not to pay a car parking fine and branded Tesco at Pitsea’s parking rules as “ludicrous”.

Joanne Bassett, 25, of Newton Close, Corringham, visited the store on Tuesday November 11 with her nine month-old son, Riley.

When she returned to her car which she thought she had parked in a mother and baby bay she was slapped with a ticket saying she had parked in a disabled space.

On closer inspection she realised she had but the markings were faded and there were no disabled signs in the immediate vicinity.

She said: “I parked in what was clearly signposted the parent and child section of the car park.

“On my return to the car I was surprised to see that I'd been given a ticket.

“I checked the space and realised that it was actually a disabled space but the paint markings were old and unclear and there was no sign to say this was a disabled space.”

Mrs Bassett then saw a parking attendant and confronted him on this issue.

He told her the store had recently changed five other parent and child spaces to disabled and because of the number of complaints regarding tickets Tesco decided to give customers a month's grace on these five spaces.

This meant that if Mrs Bassett had have parked in one of the other disabled bays she would not have been ticketed.

Mrs Bassett said: “I find this absolutely ludicrous. It’s a lottery system that Tesco seem to have adopted.

“If I had deliberately parked in a clearly marked disabled space I wouldn't have got a ticket yet because I unknowingly parked in a hidden disabled space I goy one.”

Tesco spokesman, Adam Fisher, said: "This is the first such complaint but we've listened to her point of view and are happy to waive the ticket.

“We'll also take another look at ticketing arrangements for that area of the car park."
