THE Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society relaunched their food store in East Tilbury under the new Co-operative fascia on Thursday November 13.
Pupils from the East Tilbury Junior School and the head boy and girl from St Clere’s School in Stanford-le-Hope where on hand to take part in the official ceremony.
The store, on Princess Margaret Road, is the Society’s twelfth store to take on this new fascia, and has been modernised inside with the range of products on sale extended.
Pupils from East Tilbury Juniors were chosen to take part in the relaunch as they are feeders to St Clere’s School in Stanford-le-Hope, which is one of 100 schools who are seeking to adopt the Co-operative model of governance and become a Co-operative Trust School.
The public consultative process is now underway and St Clere’s is hopeful of having everything in place by next January, making it the first Co-operative Trust School in Essex .
The move would see the school remain under local authority control and ownership, but the trust would have a say over how the school is run in terms of behaviour and uniform policies, for example.
They would also have an influence over which governors were appointed.
Schools in the trust schools programme get £10,000 from the government for set-up costs, and under a new £500,000 package, those that opt for co-operative governance models will be able to get back another £5,000 to help make the transition.
St Clere’s would work in collaboration with the Manchester based Co-operative College and its local independent Co-op, Chelmsford Star.
Tony Gudgeon, Chief Executive Officer for Chelmsford Star said: “We are very pleased to be involved in the early stage of such an important educational project and look forward to helping St Clere’s achieve their Trust School Status and contributing on an ongoing basis.”
